Dental health is vital

What Types of Treatments Will Your Child Receive During Their Appointment With a Children's Dentist?

by Felecia Butler

If you have scheduled an appointment for your child to see a children's dentist soon, then you might be hoping that they will get the best possible dental care during their appointment. You could be wondering about what type of treatment they will receive during their appointment. This depends on your child's age and needs, but overall, these are some of the basic treatments that you can usually expect.

Examination

Of course, the dentist will take the time to carefully inspect your child's teeth and gums. This allows them to get an idea of your child's overall oral health.

X-Rays

Next, your child's dentist might perform X-rays if they have not been done lately. This is done so that your child's teeth can be checked more closely for signs of decay. Additionally, children's dentists are able to use X-rays to get a look at your child's developing permanent teeth, even if they are still below the surface. This allows them to look for things like signs of misalignment or other issues.

Cleaning

Just as you probably have your teeth cleaned on your regular dental appointments, your child will need teeth cleaning, too. The process will be done similarly to how your own teeth are cleaned, and the job might be performed by a dental hygienist. This is done to help with cleaning your child's teeth more thoroughly than they are able to do on their own at home.

Fluoride Treatment

In children, fluoride treatments are often done, even though they are not usually done on adults. These treatments are done to help prevent tooth decay. Fluoride treatments are applied by a dentist or dental hygienist in small amounts. The fluoride hardens to the child's teeth and can then be brushed away when your child brushes their teeth later in the day. Ask your child's dental care professional about how long your child should wait before brushing their teeth after having one of these treatments done.

Instruction

It's important for your child to know how to take good care of their teeth at home. This means that they need to learn how to brush and floss their teeth. You might have taught them this yourself and might have worked with them on these things at home. However, the dental professionals at your child's dental office might go over these things with them as well. This is yet another way to encourage your child to take good care of their teeth at home.
