What Are the Secrets to Having a Whiter, More Captivating Smile?

by Felecia Butler

It's a no-brainer — people that smile more often look friendlier and more approachable. But for a person to smile often, they have to feel confident about their smile, as it is one of the first things other people will notice about them. Having whiter, shinier teeth is a great way to give yourself the confidence you need to wear your smile with pride. But what are the secrets to making your teeth look whiter and brighter? Keep reading on below to find out.

Don't just brush your teeth — floss them as well

You probably already know that brushing your teeth thoroughly and regularly is really important. But you may not know that flossing your teeth is equally as important. Regularly brushing and flossing of teeth ensures that food particles and debris plaque that builds up on teeth and gums as well as in the spaces between teeth is effectively removed, allow you to maintain good overall oral care.

While regular brushing and flossing of teeth will not necessarily make your teeth whiter, it will help rid of the plaque and tartar that may cause your teeth to yellow or become discoloured. This will, in turn, ensure you bring out the natural colour of your teeth, which may be any of the various shades of off-white colour — the natural colour of the human teeth is not pure white.

Cut back on foods and beverages that can stain your teeth

While some foods and beverages may be a fix on your daily diet, minimising your consumption of hard candies, blackberries, tomato sauce, red wine, black tea, coffee and other food stuffs, which discolour teeth can help keep your teeth looking white. And, when you take food and beverages that leave stains behind, make it a habit to brush your teeth immediately thereafter. This can help you retain your natural teeth colour.

Go for a teeth whitening procedure

Teeth whitening is the ultimate dental procedure that you will need to undergo so as to achieve that whiter, more lustrous smile you've always wanted. When performed by a qualified dentist with the patient sitting in a dental chair, or using home-based teeth whitening kits with the patient strictly following a qualified dentist's instructions, teeth whitening shouldn't cause any problems for the teeth and gums. Teeth whitening is only meant to improve the colour of teeth — not to affect the structure of the teeth.

Making regular visits to the dental office will provide you with a great chance to talk to your dentist about your specific dental issues and concerns, so you should go for every dental appointment.
