Answering a Few Questions About Cosmetic Dentistry

by Felecia Butler

Cosmetic dentistry is much more common today than ever before; there are a number of procedures from which to choose, and many of them are very affordable. Cosmetic dentists may also offer their own financing options so you can pay for a cosmetic procedure over time, allowing you to always look your best. Note a few questions you might have about cosmetic dentistry and then discuss these with your family dentist or a cosmetic dentist if you need more information.

What is the difference between restorative dentistry and cosmetic dentistry?

A restorative dentist performs procedures that affect the health of your teeth and your mouth; they "restore" the teeth to a healthy state. A cosmetic dentist works to create a pleasing appearance.

Note that these two fields may very well overlap; for example, both types of dentists may be skilled in applying a cap or crown. This slides over the tooth and is glued into place, protecting a chipped or broken tooth or one that is severely decayed. However, a cosmetic dentist may be a bit more skilled in shaping that crown or cap so that it closely resembles your other teeth.

Is cosmetic dentistry only done for appearance?

Certain procedures, such as whitening your teeth, may be done just so you look your best, but note that cosmetic dentistry can often protect your teeth and your oral health. A cap or crown, mentioned above, protects the tooth under it. Building up small teeth with a bonding agent can give the jaws adequate support. Reshaping teeth or covering over broken teeth might mean less wear on the gums or less risk of cutting the inside of your cheeks or gums. In turn, you look your best and your mouth and teeth are also protected.

Can cosmetic dentistry be done by a family dentist?

A family dentist may perform some basic procedures, such as tooth whitening or installing a crown. However, when it comes to the shape of your teeth, it's often best to visit a highly skilled cosmetic dentist. They may be better able to shape bonding agents, veneers, or other such materials to achieve the look you want and match your other teeth. Using a laser or drill to cut down oversized teeth or reshape crooked teeth also takes a special skill and a lot of practice, which your family dentist may not have. For these procedures, it's best to leave your teeth in the hands of a cosmetic dentist.
