How Can You Make Dental Appointments Fun for Everyone?

by Felecia Butler

Rather than treating your 6 monthly check-ups as a drag, why not try and embrace them as a fun activity. Here are some ideas to make your trips easier on everyone.

Book all the appointments at once

Rather than trying to work out separate times, why not get all the adults and kids to go to the dentist at the same time. By booking back-to-back check-ups let's the children see how the adults also get their teeth cleaned and helps everyone to have some company in the waiting room. It's also easier for the parents to only have to organise 2 visits a year.

Meal beforehand

Make sure to have a substantial meal before you head to the dentist as you'll often have some restrictions on eating, or sensitive teeth after a check-up and clean. A full stomach can also stop people from getting grumpy if they need to wait or if the procedures are a little uncomfortable. Try and carry some healthy snacks like carrot sticks in case the appointment is delayed.

Bingo for dentist words

If your kids are a little bit older, try setting up a bingo card for each child with phrases the dentist might use like "good work on the brushing" or "you need to be flossing more". Writing down some of the phrases that the dentist might use can prompt them to reflect on how their dental hygiene has been going and what they need to focus on so that they create a winning line, as well as hopefully letting them improve their hygiene habits going forward.

Colouring sheets

Many of the dental brands also have themed colouring in sheets, which can be a great option for younger children. Why not try a 'treasure hunt' where you need spot items in the dental procedures such as toothbrushes, mouthwash or items in the waiting room magazines? It can be a great way to keep you all occupied while waiting for everyone to complete their appointment. You can also find word searches and crosswords online with dental themes to help the outing seem like fun.

By framing your bi-annual dental check-up as a fun activity for the whole family you can start to reduce the stress on all family members. Ask family dentist clinics like Whole Health Dentists if they have any additional resources to make dental appointments fun, such as promotional stickers or balloons for children's visits.
